1970s

Spring Semester 1970: Dr. Wesley Dick offers first Environmental History course, which is still offered today.

April 22, 1970:  Earth Day celebrated on campus and throughout the Albion Community by cleaning up the city.

1970:  SEE was founded which was Save the Environment through Ecology.  Albion became ecology-conscious. SEE  created the Koop can toss.

1972: Whitehouse Nature Center dedicated.

1972: Albion Recycle Center opens for a couple of days a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays). The Recycle Center originally run by students was taken over by the community in 1973.

1972: Ralph Nader speaks on campus.

1973: SEE sponsored the hike-a-thon which entailed students hiking country roads for whatever sponsors would pay them and the profits were then used to lobby the state legislature on ecological concerns.

1973: Albion bans non-returnable bottles.

1977: Whitehouse Nature Center Interpretative Center dedicated.

1978: Energy expert Stewart Udall spoke on the energy crisis while visiting Albion College.
